Motorists across the UK could face penalties of up to £5,000 for careless driving during rainy conditions. Following a wet start to September, drivers have been reminded to avoid splashing pedestrians, or risk fines and points on their licence.
Experts at Quotezone are urging drivers to exercise caution during wet weather. Under Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, deliberately drenching pedestrians is illegal and is considered driving “without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road.” The Highway Code also highlights that motorists must not drive “without due care and attention” toward pedestrians.
Penalty Points and Fines
Motorists who splash pedestrians by driving through puddles may face a £100 fine and three penalty points on their licence. In more serious cases, fines can reach £5,000 for driving without proper consideration for other road users.Greg Wilson, Founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, emphasized the importance of safety: “Drivers need to know the rules of the road to protect everyone and avoid costly fines or penalty points for incidents like splashing pedestrians.” He added that drivers should slow down in rain, maintain a safe following distance of four seconds, and remain vigilant to unexpected hazards.Brake and Puddle Safety
Wilson also advised testing brakes regularly on wet roads and being cautious of puddles, which may be deeper than they appear. If a vehicle aquaplanes, drivers should avoid braking suddenly and gently lift off the accelerator while keeping the steering steady until the tyres regain traction.Tips for Driving in Wet Conditions
-
Ease off the accelerator and maintain distance: Wet conditions double stopping distances, so reduce speed and keep extra space from the car ahead.
-
Check tyres before driving: Ensure tyres have sufficient tread for grip. The 20p test can help determine if tread depth is legal and safe.
-
Use dipped headlights: Switch to dipped headlights in rain to improve visibility for yourself and others.
-
Be mindful of pedestrians: In urban areas, rain can reduce visibility, making pedestrians and cyclists harder to see. Extra caution can prevent accidents, fines, and penalty points.
-
Activate air conditioning: Running the AC prevents windows from fogging, maintaining a clear view. Failing to keep windows clear can result in fines up to £1,000 and three penalty points.
