Why Tarique Rahman Chose December 25 for His Historic Homecoming to Bangladesh

The long-anticipated return of Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has finally reached its climax. As the leader prepares to touch down on home soil after nearly eighteen years in exile, political analysts and party insiders are dissecting the calculated decision to select December 25, 2025, as the date for this momentous event, Daily Dazzling Dawn understands.

The choice of Christmas Day, a public holiday in Bangladesh, appears to be a masterstroke of civic consideration and logistical planning. Senior BNP leadership suggests that the primary motivation for selecting a holiday was to minimize the inevitable public suffering caused by the massive crowds expected to greet him. By arriving on a day when offices and schools are closed, the party aims to mitigate the gridlock and traffic congestion that a gathering of this magnitude would typically trigger in the capital, Dhaka.

Sources close to the planning process reveal that while earlier dates in December were considered, strategic preparations and security protocols could not be finalized before Victory Day on December 16. Consequently, December 25 emerged as the most viable window for a seamless transition.

Beyond logistics, the date carries profound symbolic weight. Supporters point out that December 25, 2025, holds its own historical significance, and by choosing this day, the BNP effectively cements Rahman’s return as a landmark chapter in the nation’s political calendar.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a former Vice President of the UK BNP noted that while the global significance of Christmas Day provides a unique international backdrop, the true gravity lies in the length of Rahman's absence. He remarked that eighteen years is an immense period in the life of any individual, and for the party faithful, the joy of his arrival outweighs the specific choice of date, whether it be intentional or coincidental.

The homecoming marks the end of a self-imposed exile that began in 2008. Over the last nearly two decades, Rahman has led the party from London, navigating one of the most turbulent periods in the BNP's history. His return is viewed by many as a transformative moment for the country’s democratic landscape.

Abul Kalam Azad, convenor of the UK BNP, spoke to Daily Dazzling Dawn in the early hours of Thursday, local time. He emphasized that any day Rahman chose to return would have been historic by default. However, he acknowledged that the final selection of December 25,2025  adds a unique dimension to the event, heightening the sense of a new beginning for both the party and the people of Bangladesh.

As the aircraft carrying the BNP leader approaches Dhaka, the atmosphere across the country remains electric. Security has been heightened, and thousands of activists have already begun Congregate near the airport, signaling that regardless of the date, Tarique Rahman’s return is the defining political event of the year.
