The District Administration of Sylhet has officially conferred the prestigious Expatriate Honor Award 2025 upon Mohammed Lukman Uddin, a distinguished figure in the British-Bangladeshi community, recognizing his decades of transformative leadership and social welfare. The award was presented on December 27, 2025, during a high-profile "Expatriates' Reception" held at the Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium in Sylhet. This honor, signed by Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarwoer Alam, celebrates Mr. Uddin’s lifelong commitment to building lasting institutions and strengthening cultural and educational ties between the United Kingdom and Bangladesh.
Mr. Uddin’s journey is a testament to the power of community activism. Recognized as a respected leader with over 40 years of dedicated service, he has been instrumental in advocating for the rights of the diaspora. Based in East London, he emerged as a vital organizer during the anti-racism movements that eventually saw the area recognized as a cultural hub for the Bangladeshi community. His tireless efforts have focused on unity and positive change, earning him a reputation as a bridge between generations of expatriates.
Beyond his activism in the UK, Mr. Uddin has left an indelible mark on his ancestral home in Sylhet. He is a primary architect of educational advancement in the region, most notably as a founder of Kushiyara College in Golapganj, a project dedicated to bringing higher education to rural youth. His philanthropic reach extends to the support of mosques, healthcare facilities, and local infrastructure projects in his permanent address of Sotun Mordan, Badespsha. The District Administration selected him as one of 100 "remittance heroes" from a pool of over 600 applicants worldwide, specifically honoring his contributions in the "Successful Community Leader" category.
The 2025 award ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Dr. Asif Nazrul, Adviser to the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, who served as the chief guest. The event highlighted the critical role expatriates play in local development and national branding. For Mohammed Lukman Uddin, this award serves as a formal recognition of a career spent serving others, from the streets of Whitechapel to the villages of Sylhet, reinforcing his legacy as a selfless organizer and dedicated humanitarian.
