The legal proceedings following the death of 16-year-old Chloe Watson Dransfield moved to Leeds Crown Court today, Thursday, April 2, 2026, as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances of the fatal incident, Daily Dazzling Dawn realised.
Following an initial appearance at the Magistrates' Court earlier this week, the case against three defendants reached the higher court this morning for a preliminary hearing. Kayla Smith, 18, and Archie Rycroft, 19, remain in custody, while a 17-year-old male co-defendant—who cannot be named for legal reasons—is held in secure accommodation. All three face a single charge of murder.
During the brief proceedings, the court addressed administrative matters, including the scheduling of future plea hearings and the setting of a provisional trial date. At the previous Magistrates' hearing, Rycroft entered not guilty pleas to separate, unrelated charges of burglary and theft, while the 17-year-old also pleaded not guilty to an unrelated burglary charge from 2025.
A primary focus for the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team remains the recovery of digital evidence. Senior Investigating Officer DCI James Entwistle has reiterated an appeal for video footage believed to be circulating on social media platforms, including TikTok and Snapchat.
While the police have not officially confirmed a specific motive, citing an ongoing effort to "establish the full circumstances," family and friends of the deceased have shared accounts with journalists suggesting the incident followed a period of personal friction between acquaintances. DCI Entwistle emphasized that any footage of the events at Kennerleigh Avenue is vital to the investigation and should be submitted via the Major Incident Public Portal.Detectives are reportedly exploring the possibility that a personal dispute served as the catalyst for the fatal confrontation, with investigative leads focusing on a suspected "relationship triangle" involving several acquaintances. This line of enquiry remains a central component of Operation Plaitglass as officers analyze recovered digital communications and social media interactions to determine if the tragedy was the result of a pre-existing and escalating private grievance.
While it's clear West Yorkshire Police have not formally confirmed a motive, high-level sources close to the enquiry suggest the friction may have originated from an alleged infidelity discovered several weeks prior to the incident.
The scale of Operation Plaitglass has grown, with a total of six individuals linked to the enquiry:
Three Charged: Smith, Rycroft, and the 17-year-old male.
In Custody: An 18-year-old man arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of murder remains under interrogation.
Released on Bail: An 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy, both arrested last Saturday, have been bailed pending further forensic enquiries.
Tributes to a "Student with a Future"- As the legal process unfolds, the Gomersal community continues to mourn the 16-year-old student. Chloe’s uncle, Christopher Watson, described her as a focused young woman who had recently secured a college placement for hair and beauty. Her mother, Addel Watson, released an emotional tribute through police, describing Chloe as her "best friend" and a "loyal princess."
A community-led GoFundMe campaign has raised over £17,000 to support Chloe’s parents and her three siblings—Connor, Courtney, and Cienna. Floral tributes remain at the scene in Austhorpe, where neighbor Wayne Mallows and others attempted life-saving CPR in the early hours of last Saturday.
