A 39-year-old man has been charged with assisting Iran's intelligence service following an investigation by UK Counter Terrorism Police.
Vahid Aberi, from Liverpool, was arrested on Wednesday in the Birmingham area on suspicion of an offence under Section 3 of the National Security Act. Officers also carried out searches at properties in Liverpool and Birmingham as part of the investigation.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) later charged Aberi with assisting a foreign intelligence service. Police confirmed that the case is linked to Iran.
Aberi has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said investigators have not identified any direct threat to the public, any individual, or any community in connection with the case.
She added that the investigation reflects the growing number of national security cases involving suspected foreign intelligence activity, with police continuing to act to disrupt such operations.
