A widespread search operation is actively unfolding in Liverpool city centre following a high-profile security breach during a prisoner transit transfer.
Stephen Grzyb, 22, of Princess Drive in the West Derby and Dovecot area, escaped from a GEOAmey prisoner transport vehicle at approximately 10:00 AM. The van was arriving at Liverpool Magistrates Court from the Belle Vale custody suite, where Grzyb had been held in connection with a domestic-related burglary charge.
Upon the vehicle's arrival, Grzyb fled the scene on foot, running down Red Cross Street toward The Strand. Authorities have described Grzyb as a white male with short dark hair, last seen wearing a navy T-shirt and navy shorts.
The incident has triggered an immediate review of transit security measures and custody transport protocols. Merseyside Police officers have established a broad cordon, reviewing extensive CCTV footage across the city centre and deploying foot patrols to track Grzyb's movements. In addition, police patrols have been assigned to the home of the alleged victim in the domestic burglary case to guarantee their safety while the search continues.
Addressing the public and media, Temporary Inspector Bethan Hannon told journalists: "We understand the concern this incident will cause, and it is vital the public can see Grzyb's face so they can report any sightings and help us bring him back into custody as soon as possible."
Inspector Hannon issued a stern warning regarding any attempts to assist the fugitive: "If you have heard from him or know where he is, please do the right thing and come forward. Assisting him in any way will bring police to your own door, so it is not an association worth keeping. If you see Grzyb, please call 999 immediately. We are carrying out extensive enquiries to find him with patrols on foot and CCTV enquiries being made right across the city centre so that we can return him to custody."
