The UK diaspora gathered in London to commemorate the 127th birth anniversary of Bangladesh's National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam. Organised by the Kazi Nazrul Islam Cultural Centre UK, the commemorative symposium centred on the theme "Nazrul in a Non-Discriminatory Society," examining the poet’s enduring contribution to human rights, egalitarianism, and democratic awakening.
The discussion was chaired by Emadur Rahman Emad, Convener of the Kazi Nazrul Islam Cultural Centre UK, and jointly moderated by Member Secretary Shiblu Rahman alongside M. Arif Ahmed. Professor Chowdhury Mohsin Akbari delivered the keynote address as the chief speaker, dissecting the poet’s literary defiance against colonial oppression and social injustice.

Speaking during the panel, key dignitaries emphasized that Nazrul's literature remains a vital catalyst for dismantling systemic inequality. Shariffuzzaman Chowdhury Tapan, former Deputy Mayor of Tower Hamlets Council A. N. M. Woahid Ahmad, Vice President of the London Bangla Press Club Taiseer Mahmud, renowned vocal artist Alaur Rahman, and community leaders Akhlakul Rahman Luku and Abul Hossain delivered insightful speeches.
Speakers noted that Nazrul was not merely a literary icon, but a national conscience whose pen consistently targeted corruption, prejudice, and authoritarianism. Discussants told journalists that the poet's rebellious compositions continue to serve as an intellectual foundation and moral compass for democratic movements across generations.
The assembly formally expressed its appreciation to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s administration in Bangladesh for officially designating the 2026–2027 cycle as "Nazrul Year". Diaspora representatives noted in reports provided to Daily Dazzling Dawn that this official recognition elevates the poet's global legacy and sets the stage for upcoming international academic conferences and cultural exchanges scheduled throughout the year.
The event brought together prominent community leaders, academics, and political figures, including Abul Kalam Azad, Shahidul Islam Mamun, journalist Shariffuzzaman, Gulzar Khan, Khaled Chowdhury, Ziaul Haq Zia, Shahanur Ali, Abdul Karim Nipu, Istab Uddin Ahmad, Sonia Tasnim, Sajmin Akhtar Parul, Abul Kahar Salam, Habibur Rahman Bablu, Kamal Khan, M. A. Shahid, Emdadul Mannan Chowdhury Tarham, Shafiqul Islam Kajol, Momtaz Rahman Selina, Nazmin, and Kamruzzaman Chowdhury.
The second half of the evening featured a rich cultural showcase directed by Anura Baibhav Malancha. The artistic segment commenced with a poetic recitation by Mahtir Md. Mijan, followed by a solo dance performance by child artist Roselyne. An ensemble of vocalists—including Ahona Chowdhury, Poonam Ghosh, Sadman Sahid Khan, Dr. Sutapa Dhar, Bapita Roy, Sadia Afroz Chowdhury, Shiblu Rahman, Tanveer Khan, Amit Dey, Alaur Rahman, Sunayan Chowdhury, and Jannati Kowser Leena—rendered classic solo and chorus renditions of Nazrul Sangeet. Musical accompaniment was provided by Amit Dey on the keyboard, Tanim Ahmed on the octapad and sound management, and Piyas Barua on the tabla.
Looking ahead, the Kazi Nazrul Islam Cultural Centre UK announced plans to coordinate with international literary bodies to host further symposiums across Western Europe during the Nazrul Year observance, ensuring the Rebel Poet's message of universal harmony reaches a global audience.
