A 45-year-old man from East Dene, Rotherham, who repeatedly pressured a teenage girl into sending him naked images and was later found in possession of extreme pornography involving a woman and multiple animals, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court.

John Braitch appeared before Judge Anthony Dunne after admitting three charges: possessing an extreme pornographic image, sending an image of genitalia, and sexual assault in respect of a teenager. The court heard that Braitch had contacted the teenage girl via Facebook, where he sent her pictures of his private parts and implored her to reciprocate by sending him images of her own genitalia.

Daily Dazzling Dawn understands the offending was not an isolated lapse but a sustained pattern of behaviour, a point Judge Dunne emphasised during sentencing when he noted that this was "not a single incident, it was repeated behaviour."

The investigation into Braitch's conduct commenced after the teenage girl confided in another person about his behaviour, prompting police involvement. When officers seized and examined his electronic devices, they discovered a photograph described in court as showing a woman engaged in a sex act with multiple animals.

Ian West, prosecuting, outlined the case for the Crown. Rebecca Tanner, defending, told the court that Braitch had accepted he caused "enormous harm" and had made admissions to police upon his arrest.

Judge Dunne, in his sentencing remarks, addressed the nature of the extreme image directly. "It showed a woman being sexually exploited in the most degrading way possible," he said. "Viewing such images encourages such abuse — a vulnerable woman was exploited and you indirectly encouraged that exploitation."

The court heard that Braitch had one previous conviction, for a dissimilar matter, which the judge disregarded due to its age. Judge Dunne accepted that Braitch's remorse was genuine, and noted he saw no reason to believe the defendant would fail to comply with a community order. Nevertheless, the judge concluded that the seriousness of the offending meant that "appropriate punishment can only be achieved by immediate custody."

Braitch was subsequently jailed for 21 months and handed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, a measure designed to restrict his access to potential victims and monitor his behaviour upon release.

The case underscores the growing legal and social concern around image-based sexual offending, particularly where adults exploit digital platforms to target minors. The possession of extreme pornography, while sometimes treated as a lesser offence in public discourse, was treated seriously by the court, with the judge drawing a direct link between viewing such material and the encouragement of real-world exploitation.

The sexual harm prevention order imposed on Braitch will remain in force for a decade, reflecting the court's assessment of the risk he poses. Such orders typically restrict internet use, contact with children, and travel, and can require offenders to notify authorities of certain changes in their circumstances.

Daily Dazzling Dawn notes that the investigation was triggered by the courage of a teenage girl who chose to speak out, a reminder of the critical role that confiding in trusted individuals plays in bringing such offenders to justice.

Braitch now begins his custodial sentence, with the 10-year order set to govern his conduct and freedoms well beyond his release.
