Sussex Police Economic Crime Unit investigators have secured the conviction of 49-year-old James Charles, also known as James Goatley, following a complex multi-year fraud operation that defrauded victims of over £1,159,000. Operating through two distinct entities, Olympia Mayfair and National Gold Buyers, Charles systematically deceived individuals across the United Kingdom between August 2022 and August 2024 by promising lucrative returns on high-value jewellery, watches, and precious metals. Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that the perpetrator utilised sophisticated digital marketing strategies, purchasing prominent search engine placement to project an illusion of legitimate corporate authority before arranging face-to-face meetings at rental offices and private residences.

The fraudulent enterprise relied heavily on psychological manipulation and the exploitation of consumer trust. Victims responding to professional online listings were asked to complete comprehensive questionnaires detailing valuable assets they wished to liquidate. Once contact was established, Charles persuaded sellers to relinquish physical possession of their luxury items under the agreement that they would receive total market value minus a nominal commission fee. While some initial transactions were honoured to maintain credibility, dozens of victims ultimately received mere fractions of their assets' worth or were cut off completely. Following his initial arrest on 11 February 2024 and subsequent police bail, Charles brazenly established a secondary front, National Gold Buyers, continuing his illicit operations until a second arrest on 30 August 2024.

The subsequent investigation culminated in a six-week trial at Southwark Crown Court commencing on 5 October, where legal teams prosecuted a web of deception initially detailed across 24 counts of fraud by false representation and two counts of money laundering. These charges were later amalgamated into four counts of fraudulent trading, to which Charles entered a guilty plea on 12 October before a jury formally convicted him the following day. Detective Constable Graham Gray, the officer leading the investigation, told Daily Dazzling Dawn that the offender's actions were prolific, premeditated, and entirely unremorseful. Remanded in custody, Charles is scheduled to appear for final sentencing on 5 November, while related money laundering charges will remain on file.
