Starmer and Trump Meet for Talks in New York
While the Prime Minister was in New York, Sir Keir Starmer had a meeting with Republican presidential contender Donald Trump.
In preparation for the US election in November, Sir Keir held meetings at Trump Tower on Thursday.
"I'm a great believer in personal relationships on the world stage," stated Sir Keir, explaining why he want to see Mr. Trump in person.
The prospect for a diplomatically difficult meeting stems not only from Mr. Trump's blustery demeanour but also from Sir Keir's inability to arrange a comparable meeting with Democratic nominee and vice president Kamala Harris.Asked whether he would be prepared to stand up to Mr Trump on issues such as support for Ukraine, Sir Keir said: “The first thing I think is important to say in relation to this is we’ve obviously had a special relationship with the US for a long time, forged in really difficult circumstances.
“That always sits above whoever holds the particular office, either in the US or the UK.
“And it is really important.
“I think it’s probably as strong now as it’s ever been, in relation to the Middle East and Ukraine.
You've also seen how closely I've been collaborating with the US on those two topics.
"As you would assume, we will collaborate with the president of the United States, whatever that person happens to be.
"I won't make any assumptions about what specific issues the other side of the election may be facing."
