London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. On one day of the year, though, it is abandoned.

Every borough in London is subject to ULEZ, and entering the area in a vehicle that is not ULEZ compliant requires payment. For certain cars, the daily fee is £12.50, and payment must be made by midnight three days after entering the zone.

However, there is one day when there is no charge and you are free to drive your car wherever in London if you do drive a non-compliant vehicle.

That one day is Christmas Day, when you will not need to pay from midnight to midnight. But on Boxing Day, the ULEZ charge is back in full effect. Check if your car is non-compliant here.

Congestion Charge rules for Christmas

The Congestion Charge - which covers just Central London - operates similarly in the festive period. Usually, the Congestion Charge zone operates everyday of the year between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and 12pm to 6pm on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays.

However, the days that the Congestion Charge does not operate on are a bit longer. There is no charge from Christmas Day all the way to the end of New Year's Day. That's eight days with no Congestion Charge
