Strong earthquake in China

A powerful earthquake in China has claimed the lives of at least nine people.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Centre, the 6.8-magnitude earthquake occurred just after 9.05 a.m. on Tuesday in a hilly location in the autonomous Tibet province, close to the Nepali border.

It was felt in Bangladesh, India and Nepal, in addition to China. However, no damage has been reported yet.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said it had recorded a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in the area.

State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) cited the Ministry of Emergency Management for the number of those who had died, but did not give details on the casualties.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located where the Indian and Eurasian plates clash and cause uplifts in the Himalayan mountains.

There have been 10 earthquakes of at least magnitude 6 in the area where Tuesday's quake hit over the past century, the USGS said.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed some 9,000 people and damaged about 1 million structures in Nepal in 2015.
