A former pub could soon be transformed into a mosque, according to newly submitted plans. Developers behind the proposal for the former Glen Pub state that there has been "no interest" in keeping the site as a pub.
Located on Hillsborough Road in Eyres Monsell, the site could be converted into a place of worship if the Eyres Monsell Community Foundation's application is approved. The foundation argues that the mosque is necessary, as they frequently struggle to find a large enough venue for special annual prayers, religious observances, and celebrations.
In planning documents submitted to Leicester City Council, the foundation explains that the decision to repurpose the site was made due to a lack of "substantive interest" in maintaining it as a pub. They claim that "demographic changes in the local community" have contributed to the site's "long-term, terminal decline," making its revival as a pub unlikely.
The proposal also includes plans to replace a flat above the pub, which previously housed the landlord, as part of the redevelopment. If the project moves forward, the site would host prayer services at different times throughout the year. Between June and August, Fajr prayers would take place between 3am and 4.30am, while Isha prayers would be held between 10.15pm and 10.45pm. During the winter months (December to February), Fajr would be scheduled between 6.30am and 7.30am, with Isha occurring between 6pm and 7pm.
The proposal is currently open for public consultation, with residents encouraged to share their views until Friday, April 4. Leicester City Council is expected to make a decision on the application by early May.
