Balkans Eye EU: Membership Could Boost Opportunities for South Asian Migrants

April 25, 2025
Enlargement could create new job markets and economic opportunities in the new member states, potentially attracting migrants from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

The European Union is considering further expansion, with several Balkan countries leading the pack of potential new members. Montenegro and Serbia are the most advanced in their accession negotiations, having been candidate countries since 2010 and 2014, respectively. Albania and North Macedonia are also in the negotiating stages, having been granted candidate status more recently. Moldova and Ukraine began negotiations in 2024. Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Georgia have candidate status, but must complete additional reforms before formal negotiations can begin. Kosovo applied for membership in December 2022.

Benefits of EU Membership:Joining the EU offers significant advantages to both citizens and immigrants. For citizens, membership means:

Freedom of Movement: The right to live, work, study, or retire in any EU country.

Economic Prosperity: Access to the world's largest single market and, for some, the Eurozone.

Rights and Protections: Guarantees of fundamental, digital, social, and economic rights.

Borderless Travel: Visa-free travel within the Schengen Area.

For immigrants, including those from South Asia, EU membership can provide:

Legal Pathways: Clearer and more standardized immigration procedures.

Family Reunification: Easier processes for family members to join them.

Long-Term Residency: The possibility of becoming a long-term resident after five years.

Equal Treatment: Access to employment, social security, and tax benefits on par with EU citizens.

Impact on Migrants from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan:While the EU has policies to manage migration and integrate immigrants, the impact of new member states on South Asian migrants is complex:

Increased Opportunities: Enlargement could create new job markets and economic opportunities in the new member states, potentially attracting migrants from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

Enhanced Rights: As EU citizens or legal residents in new member states, South Asian migrants would be entitled to the same rights and protections as other EU residents, including protection against discrimination.

Regional Cooperation: The EU encourages regional integration and supports the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), which could lead to increased cooperation and understanding.

It's important to note that the EU also has policies in place to manage irregular migration and ensure the return of individuals who do not have the right to stay in the EU.

The potential enlargement of the EU represents a significant step towards greater integration and cooperation in Europe, with potential benefits for all residents, including migrants from South Asia.
