At least five individuals, including a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer and the suspected gunman, were killed in a shooting at a Midtown Manhattan high-rise that houses major financial firms and the NFL headquarters, police confirmed.
A Bangladeshi American police officer was among five people killed in a gunman's attack in Manhattan, New York. The assailant later committed suicide. The deceased police officer, Didarul Islam, was a Bangladeshi American. It is known that Didarul, a resident of Kulaura Upazila in Moulvibazar, had a wife who is eight months pregnant. Didarul Islam's body is currently at Columbia Hospital. A pall of grief has descended upon the community following news of his death.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. local time on Monday at 345 Park Avenue. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the case remains under active investigation.
According to surveillance footage, the shooter exited a double-parked black BMW on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets, armed with an M4 rifle. The gunman entered the building's lobby, immediately turned right, and opened fire on an NYPD officer.
He then fatally shot a woman and a security guard on the ground floor before heading to the 33rd floor, where he killed another man. One more person was injured and remains hospitalized.
The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, who has a listed address in Las Vegas. Authorities are still investigating his motive.
Among the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old married father of two, with a third child on the way. Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at the press briefing, described Officer Islam as a Bangladeshi immigrant who “gave his life protecting New Yorkers.”
“We lost four innocent lives today to another tragic episode of gun violence, including one of our own," said Adams.
Media outlets, including CNN, shared an image of the gunman captured on security footage entering the building with a rifle in hand.
The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, located just south of Central Park and near Rockefeller Center, is home to global corporations such as Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and the NFL headquarters.
In a separate incident earlier on Monday, another shooting took place outside the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. A gunman opened fire at the valet area of the casino-hotel complex just before 7:30 a.m., killing three people and critically injuring two others. The attacker, described only as an adult male, was seriously wounded after being shot by police. Authorities believe the victims were randomly targeted.
