The Sylheti Language Recognition Movement Council organized a human chain in Sylhet demanding state recognition for the Sylheti language and its traditional Nagri script. The event took place on Wednesday (October 22) noon in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in Sylhet.

Following the human chain, the leaders of the organization submitted a memorandum to the Chief Adviser through the Deputy Commissioner.

The demonstration was presided over by Muhammad Dilwar Hossain, the convener of the council, and conducted by the member secretary. Among the speakers was Md. Suej Hossain along with other participants.

Speakers said the Sylheti language is an ancient, rich, and distinct language with its own grammar and Nagri script. It is not only the language of the Sylhet region but also a symbol of cultural identity for the Sylheti diaspora spread across the world.

They further stated that, according to the Constitution of Bangladesh, the state has a duty to preserve and promote all distinct languages of the country. In that spirit, granting state recognition to the Sylheti language and Nagri script is a demand of the time.

The speakers also mentioned that the Sylheti language ranks 97th among the most widely spoken languages in the world and is internationally recognized, yet it has not received official recognition in Bangladesh.

The demonstrators called for the inclusion of the Sylheti language in education, culture, and media, as well as initiatives to preserve and conduct research on the Nagri script.
