The Prince and Princess of Wales have said they are “deeply concerned” by the latest revelations linked to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Kensington Palace has confirmed.
A palace spokesperson said their thoughts “remain focused on the victims”. This is the first time Prince William and Catherine’s views on the crisis have been made public.
The statement was released just hours before Prince William began a three-day official visit to Saudi Arabia, where he is due to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on the first day of the trip. Palace officials indicated that the clarification was intended to allow the prince to focus fully on what is expected to be his most significant diplomatic visit so far.
The royal family’s recent work has been overshadowed by renewed attention on the Epstein scandal, following the release of millions of documents by US authorities.
The documents have triggered fresh allegations involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and led UK police to open an investigation into former minister Peter Mandelson over alleged misconduct in public office. Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing.
Among the claims are that a second woman was sent to the UK by Epstein for a sexual encounter with Mountbatten-Windsor, and that he and Epstein allegedly asked an exotic dancer to take part in a threesome at Epstein’s Florida home.
There are also allegations that Mountbatten-Windsor shared confidential reports from official visits to Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore during his time as a UK trade envoy.
He has denied any wrongdoing and recently moved out of the Royal Lodge to a temporary residence on the Sandringham estate. He has not commented on the latest document release.
Last week, Prince Edward became the first senior royal to speak publicly about the renewed scandal, saying it was important to “remember the victims”.
