A seismic shift is occurring in the political landscape of Sunamganj as a prominent voice from the British Bangladeshi diaspora prepares to return home for a pivotal leadership role.

Return of a Grassroots Architect

Mohammad Abul Hossain, a battle-hardened organiser for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has formally declared his candidacy for the upcoming Jagannathpur Municipal mayoral election. His announcement follows nearly two decades of influential political activity in the United Kingdom, where he served as a central figure in the party’s international advocacy. Born in Habibpur to the late Abdul Malik Bhashani and Rabeya Khatun, Hossain’s political identity was forged in the 1980s and 90s through student activism and fierce resistance against autocratic rule. After rising to become the Senior Vice-President of the Sunamganj District Chhatra Dal, political persecution under the previous regime forced him into a long exile. In London, he remained a tireless campaigner, leading the UK Volunteer Wing and coordinating the BNP’s international media outreach to highlight human rights issues in his homeland.

Legacy of Sacrifice and Resilience

The path back to Jagannathpur is one paved with personal sacrifice. For 17 years, the former administration’s restrictions prevented Hossain from stepping foot on his native soil, famously denying him the opportunity to attend his own father’s funeral. Hossain told journalists that the pain of being unable to say a final goodbye to his family has only strengthened his resolve to ensure no other citizen faces such injustice. He noted that his candidacy is not a pursuit of prestige but a mission to reclaim the rights of the people who have stood by him despite his absence. He described his political philosophy as one rooted in service rather than rule, aiming to turn the municipality into a sanctuary of justice and equity.

Vision for a Global Jagannathpur

Hossain’s platform blends local grassroots needs with international standards of governance. A cornerstone of his manifesto is the pioneering "Diaspora Protection Desk," designed to safeguard the assets of expatriates and provide a direct legal link for families living abroad—a move that has already sparked immense enthusiasm among the Jagannathpur community in the UK. His broader "Vision for Jagannathpur" includes a zero-tolerance crackdown on drug networks, the modernisation of the town’s antiquated waste and drainage systems, and a digital overhaul of municipal services to eliminate corruption. Furthermore, he has pledged to advocate fiercely for the long-delayed domestic gas connections for the town, arguing that proximity to major gas fields should finally benefit the local residents.

As the municipality prepares for the polls, Hossain’s background as a seasoned media personality is proving to be a significant asset. Having worked with major UK-based Bengali news channels and serving as Chairman of AN TV, his ability to communicate complex issues has resonated with younger voters and the business community alike. Local elders and civil society members told journalists that his sophisticated approach to leadership could be the catalyst Jagannathpur needs for true structural transformation. Hossain concluded by telling journalists that "Service is my religion and development is my goal," signaling that his return marks the beginning of a new chapter for the municipality. With a massive support base both at home and abroad, his candidacy is now the focal point of the regional electoral discourse.
