What Could Have Caused the Heartbreaking Loss of Scarlett and Jason?

As a community navigates a period of unprecedented sorrow, local religious leaders have called for a "silent presence" and spiritual solidarity with a family twice bereaved in a single week.

The Ministry of Presence in Long Pavement

In the wake of back-to-back tragedies, the spiritual landscape of Limerick has turned towards the Faulkner family home at the Long Pavement site. On the night of Sunday, 19th April 2026, Fr Pat Hogan—the chaplain to the Traveller community—spent several hours with the grieving household. Describing the atmosphere to a journalist, Fr Hogan remarked on the profound weight of the silence. "We prayed. There are no words, but there was a lot of silent sitting last night," he stated. He noted that despite their immense faith, the loss of two children—Scarlett, 29, and her brother Jason, who was in his 30s—in such rapid succession has left parents Mary and Banny navigating a "double tragedy" that few can comprehend.

A Community Seeking Solace

The grief shared by the Faulkner family has resonated deeply across the city, particularly as many within the local community have experienced similar high rates of loss. Fr Hogan highlighted the dignity with which the family is carrying their pain, observing that while they asked for prayers, the physical absence of their loved ones is an extraordinary burden. "I’m very conscious that the amount of loss in Traveller communities is extraordinary and how they carry that pain silently," he added. He reflected on the pleasant nature and deep-rooted faith that both the brother and sister exhibited over the many years he had known them.

Reflections from the Altar

Canon Dónal McNamara, who officiated Scarlett’s funeral mass at St Munchin’s Church on 17th April, expressed his personal heartbreak upon hearing of Jason’s death just two days later. Addressing the situation, he spoke of the inadequacy of language when faced with such profound crosses to bear. "There are moments in life when words seem completely inadequate, and this is one such moment," Canon McNamara told a journalist. He emphasised that the role of the wider community now is to stay close and walk with the family, becoming a "sign of God’s presence" by helping to carry the weight that is now theirs.

The Ongoing Search for Justice and Peace

While the spiritual focus remains on mourning and support, the judicial process continues to unfold. Scarlett Faulkner passed away on 13th April following a 23-day struggle after an alleged incident in Birdhill on 21st March, which left her with catastrophic head injuries. The upcoming court appearance on 23rd April at the Tipperary District Court in Nenagh remains a pivotal date for the investigation into the alleged assault. Simultaneously, as the family prepares for a second funeral in the coming days, the focus remains on shielding Scarlett’s young daughter, Oceanna, and the remaining siblings. The dual investigations and the community’s outpouring of support reflect a city united in hope for both justice and healing.
