A tense security incident unfolded in Washington, D.C., after a man armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach a high-profile dinner attended by Donald Trump on Saturday night.

The incident took place at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, an event that draws political leaders, media figures, and guests from across the country. Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California. He was reportedly carrying a shotgun and a handgun when he approached a secured checkpoint inside the venue.

Security personnel, including Secret Service agents, responded immediately and prevented the suspect from entering the main ballroom where the president was present. During the confrontation, one officer was shot, but the bullet was stopped by a protective vest. The officer was taken to hospital and is expected to recover.

Officials confirmed that the suspect acted alone. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser stated there is no indication of additional suspects. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the suspect has been charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer with a dangerous weapon, and additional charges are expected.

Following the incident, Trump addressed reporters and praised the rapid response of law enforcement, describing the attacker as a “lone wolf.” He emphasized that the suspect never came close to reaching the main event area and commended security forces for preventing a potentially more serious outcome.

The event was briefly disrupted as guests were escorted out amid a heavy police presence. Authorities later confirmed that the situation was fully under control.

The Washington Hilton has historical significance, as it was the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan.

Officials have announced that the event will be rescheduled within the next few weeks while the investigation continues.
