The political row surrounding Nigel Farage has deepened after the Labour Party accused the Reform UK leader of avoiding scrutiny over a controversial £5 million personal gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne ahead of the 2024 general election.
Speaking on BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice defended Farage, insisting the payment complied with all legal requirements because Farage was not actively involved in politics at the time the money was received.
Tice dismissed concerns surrounding the donation, arguing that the funds were intended to support Farage’s personal safety and security. He claimed the state had failed to provide adequate protection and described the donor as someone committed to keeping Farage safe.
However, Labour officials say the circumstances surrounding the payment raise serious ethical and political concerns. Labour Party chair Anna Turley accused Farage of operating under “one rule for them and another for everyone else,” claiming he accepted the money without properly declaring it before later promoting crypto-friendly tax policies that could benefit the donor.
The controversy comes as Reform UK continues to gain momentum following major successes in local elections across England, where the party secured more than 1,400 council seats. Reform also performed strongly in Welsh and Scottish elections, with Farage describing the results as a “historic shift in British politics.”
The Electoral Commission is reportedly considering whether to launch a formal investigation into the £5 million gift and whether electoral laws were breached. If authorities determine parliamentary rules were violated, Farage could face disciplinary action ranging from a formal apology to suspension from Parliament. A suspension exceeding 10 days could even trigger a recall petition in his Clacton constituency.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer added pressure by saying Farage still had “many questions to answer” and accused him of avoiding proper scrutiny from Parliament, the media, and the public.
Questions have intensified because Farage initially stated he did not intend to stand as an MP in 2024 but reversed that decision only weeks after receiving the personal gift from Harborne, who later donated an additional £9 million to Reform UK — reportedly the largest single donation ever made by a living individual to a British political party.

Meanwhile, Tice also faces separate allegations linked to unpaid corporation tax connected to one of his investment companies that previously donated to Reform UK.
