UK Wins Court Ruling Over Cancelled Rwanda Asylum Deal, Avoids £100M Payment Claim

An international court has ruled that the United Kingdom will not be required to pay millions of pounds to Rwanda following the collapse of a controversial asylum agreement, ending a major legal dispute between the two governments.

The case stemmed from a deal originally signed under the previous Conservative government, which proposed transferring asylum seekers arriving in the UK illegally to Rwanda for processing and settlement. Under the agreement, the UK was expected to provide significant financial payments to support Rwanda’s role in the scheme.

However, the policy was later scrapped by Prime Minister Keir Starmer shortly after taking office, prompting Rwanda to pursue legal action. The Rwandan government had claimed that the termination of the agreement amounted to a breach of contract and sought compensation exceeding £100 million.

The dispute was reviewed at an international tribunal in the Netherlands, where legal representatives for the UK defended the decision to end the arrangement. They argued that it was reasonable for the incoming government to withdraw from the policy and that no additional payments should be made following its cancellation.

After examining the arguments from both sides, the court ruled in favour of the UK, concluding that it would not be liable for the claimed compensation.

The ruling brings an end to a politically sensitive dispute linked to one of the most debated immigration policies in recent UK political history, and removes the possibility of a substantial financial payout to Rwanda.
