Home Office says presence of Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker in UK ‘may not be conducive to the public good’

Two well-known American political commentators have been denied entry to the United Kingdom just days before scheduled appearances at major public events in London, sparking debate over free speech, public safety, and immigration policy.

Cenk Uygur, founder and host of the popular online political program The Young Turks, and political streamer Hasan Piker confirmed that UK authorities had revoked their travel permissions before their planned participation in SXSW London. Uygur also stated that he was scheduled to address an event organized by students at the University of Oxford.

Both commentators publicly criticized the decision. Uygur claimed the move was linked to his outspoken criticism of Israel and questioned whether Western democracies were continuing to uphold free speech principles. Piker echoed similar concerns, alleging that political pressure related to criticism of Israel had influenced the decision.

The UK Home Office confirmed that both men's Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs) had been canceled. In a statement, officials said the action was taken because their presence in the country "may not be conducive to the public good."

Authorities emphasized that such decisions are based on assessments of potential risks to UK society and are not tied to any single political viewpoint. The Home Office added that individuals whose ETAs are canceled may still apply for a visa if they wish to travel to the UK.

The decision follows growing scrutiny of Piker's planned appearance. Labour MP David Taylor recently argued that allowing him into the country would not serve the public interest. Piker has previously faced criticism for controversial remarks about U.S. foreign policy and for comments regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas. While he has denied accusations of antisemitism, he has maintained strong criticism of the Israeli government.

Jewish advocacy group Community Security Trust (CST) also expressed concerns about Piker's participation at SXSW London, accusing him of promoting rhetoric that includes antisemitic themes and expressing views perceived as sympathetic to extremist organizations.

Meanwhile, reports suggest concerns regarding Uygur's public statements also contributed to the decision. Critics have accused him of promoting controversial claims about Israeli influence in U.S. politics and questioning evidence related to high-profile grooming gang scandals in the UK.

SXSW London organizers defended their approach to speaker selection, stating that the event aims to host a diverse range of voices and perspectives. Organizers stressed that inviting a speaker does not imply endorsement of all their views or affiliations.

The case has reignited discussions about the balance between free expression and public safety, particularly as governments across Europe face increasing pressure over how to handle controversial public figures and political commentators.
