Second Tube Strike Causes Major Disruption Across London

Thousands of commuters across London faced major travel difficulties on Thursday as a second London Underground strike in just one week brought widespread disruption to the capital's transport network.

The 24-hour strike, led by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), began at midnight after talks with Transport for London (TfL) failed to produce a breakthrough in a long-running dispute over working hours and employment conditions.

The industrial action follows a similar walkout earlier in the week and has affected several Underground lines, leaving passengers scrambling for alternative routes during the busy working day.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan had appealed to union leaders to return to negotiations and call off the strike, warning of the significant impact on workers, businesses, and public services.

"The workers on strike lose a day's salary, TfL loses revenue, businesses lose customers, and people struggle to reach important appointments," Khan said, describing the strike as a major inconvenience for Londoners.

At the heart of the dispute is a proposed four-day working week. The RMT maintains that many of its members oppose the new arrangements, while the drivers' union ASLEF has already accepted the proposal.

Despite the disruption, several services continue to operate normally, including the Jubilee Line, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), Elizabeth Line, Liberty Line, Lioness Line, Mildmay Line, Suffragette Line, Tram network, Weaver Line, and Windrush Line.

However, the Circle Line and Waterloo & City Line remain completely suspended. Meanwhile, the Bakerloo, Central, Metropolitan, and Piccadilly lines are only partially operating, resulting in delays and reduced services across parts of the network.

Transport officials have advised passengers to check travel updates before setting out and to allow extra time for their journeys as disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

The latest strike action highlights ongoing tensions between transport unions and TfL, with commuters once again bearing the brunt of the dispute as efforts to reach an agreement remain stalled.
