A 26-year-old man who inflicted a devastating and permanent brain injury upon an innocent woman has been jailed for 30 years following a rigorous police investigation that thoroughly dismantled his fabricated cover story.
Amir Khan, of Villa Road, was convicted of attempted murder in May and received his three-decade sentence on 7 July. The court heard that Khan launched a brutal attack against the woman, who was known to him, in Hockley last year. He stabbed her directly in the back of the head before contacting emergency services, where he deliberately lied to operators by claiming she had simply fallen over.
Despite Khan’s deceptive cover story, it was immediately clear to responding paramedics and police officers at the scene that the victim's trauma was completely inconsistent with an accidental fall. The mechanical nature of the head injury prompted his immediate arrest shortly after the incident.
Throughout his police interviews, Khan maintained a strict "no comment" stance, refusing to answer questions or reveal the location of the weapon, which investigators never recovered. The targeted assault was not fatal, but the severe brain damage has left the young woman requiring intensive, round-the-clock care for the rest of her life—profoundly impacting her, her family, and her friends.
With the criminal trial and sentencing concluded, focus now turns to what happens next for the victim. Medical teams are shifting toward long-term, specialized neurological rehabilitation and permanent care administration, while Khan begins his mandatory 30-year term.
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Allen told journalists that the substantial sentence directly reflects the severity of this horrendous attack. She added that authorities take violence against women and girls extremely seriously, highly praising DC Gemma Peckett, who worked tirelessly to secure the charges and ultimate conviction. Investigators stated to journalists that this horrific assault permanently ruined a young life, expressing hope that the family can draw comfort from the knowledge that Khan will remain behind bars for a significant amount of time.
