Following the devastating loss of eleven-year-old George Dennis on Epping Road in Ongar, the serious collision investigation has entered a critical phase, with forensic teams systematically tracing local traffic networks to piece together the moments leading up to the tragedy.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 4:20 pm on Friday, 10 July 2026, involved a heavy goods vehicle. The young schoolboy sustained catastrophic injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he tragically passed away. A forty-eight-year-old driver from Derbyshire has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation while specialist officers build a comprehensive prosecution file.
Headteacher and Mother Lead Profound Tributes
The loss has deeply impacted Moreton Primary School, where George was on the cusp of graduating. Headteacher Nikki Batt led the academic community in mourning, expressing profound sadness over the sudden void left in the school. In an incredibly moving statement, George's mother, Emma Dennis, spoke to journalists to share her family's unimaginable grief.
"Our beloved son, George Dennis, was just 11 years old when he tragically died on Friday following a road traffic collision," she told journalists. "He had his whole life ahead of him. George was a bright light in our lives. He had the kindest heart, a cheeky smile, and a personality that was truly one of a kind. He was full of life, always making people laugh, and brought so much happiness to everyone who knew him. He leaves behind a special group of friends whose lives have been changed forever. They have lost not just a classmate, but a loyal friend, teammate and someone who made every day brighter, even though they all supported different teams."
"He was about to leave primary school and was so excited for the next chapter of his life," his mother continued. "George was absolutely football mad and a devoted Tottenham Hotspur supporter. Football was his passion, and it brought him so much joy and happiness. Always so passionate, shouting at the telly watching every game when his beloved spurs scored. A noise I will miss for a lifetime. George has two other brothers and a sister, and was loved beyond words by his whole family. He was not only a much-loved son but also an amazing brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He meant everything to us."
"George was my world, My baby," she added, reflecting on the sheer scale of their loss. "From the day he was born, being a light in our lives, Like all of our children he was so, so, so, so special. The pain of losing him is impossible to put into words, and we simply do not know how we will ever begin to heal as a family. Our lives have changed forever, and there will always be a space that can never be filled. We have been overwhelmed by the love, kindness and support shown by our family, friends, neighbours, George's school, the football community and so many people who never even met him. Every message, every flower, every kind word and every act of support and kindness has meant more than we could ever express. It has reminded us just how many lives George touched in his short but beautiful life. At this time, we ask for privacy as we grieve and try to support George's brothers and sister through this unimaginable loss. George will be loved forever, missed every single day, and remembered always. He was our everything. Thank you to everyone who has kept George and our family in their thoughts and prayers."
