Following the drowning of Shally Rahman, 41, and her 15-year-old daughter Samiha off West Mersea beach, the bodies of both victims remain at the Colchester Hospital mortuary while police and coronial procedures continue. Under English law, because both deaths occurred under sudden and unnatural circumstances in open coastal water, the cases were referred to HM Coroner for Essex to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Pathologists are required to carry out post-mortem examinations to establish the exact medical cause of death before formal paperwork can be issued. No official timeframe for the release of the bodies has been announced by authorities; clearance will depend on the completion of these mandatory medical examinations and necessary administrative reviews by the coroner's office.
Members of the family, who are of Islamic faith, face an agonizing wait as traditional customs call for burial to take place as swiftly as possible following a death. While coronial offices often endeavour to expedite protocols for faith-based burials where feasible, formal release can only occur once the coroner is fully satisfied that all legal requirements have been met.
The tragedy occurred during a family seaside trip when a British Bangladeshi group of approximately ten relatives—travelling from Barking and East London—gathered near Seaview Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses reported seeing members of the group standing on an exposed sandbank when an incoming spring tide rapidly surrounded them.
Within minutes, the advancing water covered the sandbank, destabilising the terrain underfoot and sweeping several individuals into deep, fast-moving channel currents. When a seven-year-old relative got into difficulty in the deep water, Shally Rahman and her teenage daughter Samiha entered the current to save him. Neither mother nor daughter were strong swimmers, and both quickly succumbed to the powerful tidal drag.
Passersby, beach hut occupants, and local cafe workers rushed to help, providing CPR on the shoreline until emergency personnel arrived. A major multi-agency rescue response—including HM Coastguard, two air ambulances, critical care paramedics, and the Hazardous Area Response Team—converged on the scene shortly after 5:30 PM.
Despite resuscitation efforts on the beach, both Shally and Samiha were pronounced dead at the scene. The seven-year-old relative was rescued and airlifted to a London hospital, where he remains in critical condition on life support. Three other family members were taken by road ambulance to Colchester Hospital, where two were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and shock.
Relatives in both the UK and Bangladesh have expressed profound shock over the double fatality. Shally Rahman worked as a schoolteacher in East London, while her husband, Dr Monsur Rahman, serves as the Vice President of Jubo Dal UK, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Detectives from Essex Police have confirmed that the deaths are being treated as a fatal accident rather than a criminal investigation. Investigating officers continue to appeal for any beachgoers who were near the West Mersea shoreline at the time of the tide change to provide witness statements or mobile phone footage by calling 101 and quoting incident 1090.
