Thousands of mourners gathered in East London today as the local community united to pay their final respects to a mother and teenage daughter who lost their lives during a desperate rescue attempt off the Essex coast.
Following the solemn completion of the Janaza prayers shortly after Zuhr prayer at 1:30 PM, thousands of community members, family, and friends joined in collective mourning. The cortege is now proceeding to the final resting place at the Gardens of Peace on Colchester Road, RM3 0NZ, where final burial arrangements are taking place.
The heartbreaking funeral follows the catastrophic incident at West Mersea, near Colchester, where 41-year-old teacher Shally Rahman and her 15-year-old daughter Samiha lost their lives on Wednesday evening. The mother and daughter had ventured into treacherous waters after a seven-year-old relative became stranded during a family day trip.
According to local accounts, a holidaymaker on a family trip to celebrate his daughter's birthday heard hysterical screaming across the beach around 5:35 PM. The kitchen fitter swam repeatedly against an aggressive incoming tide to bring the victims ashore and assisted in lifting the young boy onto an arriving lifeboat.
Speaking to journalists about the harrowing moments, the rescuer explained that when he reached the water, the first two individuals he encountered were face down. He brought Mrs Rahman to shore before returning into the sea to retrieve Samiha, followed by a third attempt to reach two other young children drifting further out into open water. He noted that the waves were continually hitting him in the face as the current proved significantly stronger than expected.
Despite immediate resuscitation attempts on the sand by bystanders and emergency responders, the mother and teenager could not be revived. The seven-year-old boy was airlifted from the scene and remains in critical condition in a London hospital, while three other individuals were transported to another hospital for medical assessment.
As reported by Daily Dazzling Dawn, family members described how a sudden wave caught the group off guard while they were playing near the shoreline. Relatives explained that the victims were not strong swimmers and had simply set out to enjoy a summer family gathering. A grieving relative told journalists that the entire family across the United Kingdom and overseas remains in deep shock and speechlessness over the sudden loss.
Essex Police confirmed that extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the precise sequence of events leading up to the tragedy. Investigating officers have been taking accounts from dozens of witnesses who were present along the crowded coast at the time. Authorities have asked anyone with footage or relevant information regarding incident 109 to contact investigators as the community continues to support the grieving family through this unimaginable loss.
