Following their conviction at Preston Crown Court for the horrific abuse and murder of 13-month-old Preston Davey, former high school head of year Jamie Varley, 37, and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, have begun serving their lengthy custodial sentences under maximum security conditions.
Varley, who received a whole-life tariff for inflicting what trial judge Mr Justice Turner termed "unremitting abuse", appeared via videolink from HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire for a brief hearing held under the judicial slip rule. Concurrently, McGowan-Fazakerley remains incarcerated at HMP Preston serving a 25-year sentence for child cruelty, sexual assault, and allowing the infant's death.
Owing to the gravity and nature of their crimes, both men have been placed under strict protective measures, remaining segregated from the general prison population to prevent retaliatory violence. Police investigators stated that the couple's acts "shocked the nation," describing Varley as a "sadist" who treated the baby as a "plaything" during four months of systematic cruelty inside their home in Staining, near Blackpool.

Event organizer Jim McMillan, who assisted with travel for the child's birth mother Sarah Davey and birth father Gary Nolan, told journalists he arranged the tribute for a toddler who "died unnecessarily," noting the birth mother felt "upset but moved" by the turnout.
