A 47-year-old woman has been arrested following a shocking daylight attack in London's Covent Garden that left four men injured. Police have seized a pair of scissors at the scene and believe the incident is mental health-related.
Four Men Injured in West End Attack
Emergency services were called to Endell Street, a bustling thoroughfare in the heart of the West End, at approximately 12.27pm on Wednesday. Officers discovered four men, aged 34, 39, 42 and 52, with stab wounds. The London Ambulance Service dispatched an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer, while the London Air Ambulance was also scrambled, landing in nearby Trafalgar Square.
A 47-year-old woman was detained at the scene on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and assault, and remains in custody. A pair of scissors was recovered from the location, with witnesses reportedly telling police they saw a woman attacking members of the public with the implement.
Mental Health-Linked Incident
Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, who leads policing in the area, has moved to reassure the local community, stating: "While still at an early stage of the investigation, we would like to reassure the community that we currently believe this to be an isolated, mental health-related incident" . Police have requested sensitive reporting, and the scene on Endell Street remained cordoned off as of Wednesday afternoon to allow forensic teams to complete their inquiries.
Investigation Latest
All four victims were initially taken to a major trauma centre. The Metropolitan Police has since confirmed that two men have been discharged from hospital, while the other two remain under medical care with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing . Detectives are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, asking the public to call 101 quoting reference CAD3449/05AUG .
A post-mortem examination is not required, as the injuries are non-fatal. The main line of inquiry will now focus on establishing the woman's state of mind at the time of the incident through a psychiatric assessment. This process is standard practice when mental health is believed to be a factor. Police are expected to conduct further interviews with the discharged victims and review local CCTV footage to piece together the full chronology of events. While there is currently no wider threat to the public, the incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and prompted a significant police presence.
