Why Did a Son Burn Down His Mother’s Bradford Home While She Slept?

Following his immediate remand into custody, 28-year-old Atif Asif faces an extensive period of rehabilitation and offender monitoring behind bars as HM Prison Service executes his three-year custodial sentence. The court outcome sets in motion formal post-conviction offender management reviews and housing remediation assessments by social housing provider Accent Housing following a destructive arson attack at his mother’s residence in Merchants Close, East Bowling.

Daily Dazzling Dawn learned that Asif had departed Bradford Royal Infirmary at approximately 6:00 am on May 10, taking a taxi directly to the East Bowling address. Closed-circuit television footage captured him entering the rear garden of the property and disappearing from camera view for seven minutes before returning to the waiting taxi, which then left the area. During that seven-minute period, a fire was deliberately ignited inside a garden shed at the rear of the building.

The flames rapidly spread along a garden boundary fence and penetrated through patio doors into Asif’s mother’s house while she was sleeping inside, causing extensive damage to the living room and hallway. The resulting blaze triggered an emergency evacuation when an alert neighbour discovered the rising smoke and moved quickly to wake Asif’s mother, evacuating her safely from the address before alerting other surrounding residents and calling 999. Professional fire investigation officers later calculated the estimated cost of damage to the property to be between £35,000 and £40,000.

Prior Offences and Judicial Findings

Asif was arrested the following day back at Bradford Royal Infirmary, where he had presented himself for mental health treatment after hearing voices. During police interviews, he made no comment to investigating officers. Court proceedings revealed that at the time of the arson, Asif was already subject to a 12-month community order handed down just four days earlier for harassment and sending offensive communications.

Judge Robinson noted that the excuse "was never going to wash" after professional fire investigation officers conclusively ruled out accidental causes, confirming the start of the fire required the direct application of a naked flame to combustible material. Although Asif later accepted the professional findings, he claimed to have no memory of starting the fire.

The court formally took note of an official pre-sentence report assessing Asif’s risk of causing serious harm to the public as "high". Addressing the broader context of the justice system, Judge Robinson stated he was acutely conscious of the ongoing crisis and overcrowding in the prison system, acknowledging that serving time in custody is likely harsher now than in previous years. Nevertheless, the court unhesitatingly concluded that the offence was so severe that the necessary punishment could only be achieved through immediate imprisonment. Asif will serve his sentence subject to standard post-release supervision and multi-agency monitoring upon completion of his custodial term.
