Nigerian man deported from the UK allegedly bit Garda after arriving in Dublin by ferry

Legislation and court procedures are set to take center stage this week as institutional mechanisms decide the next steps for a man accused of assaulting law enforcement officers. Grifix Onowu, 37, who has no fixed address, is scheduled to appear at Cloverhill District Court following a decision by the Dublin District Court to remand him in custody.

The legal proceedings stem from an incident at the Stena yard in Dublin Port, where police officers intercepted Onowu following his arrival by ferry. During the interaction, Onowu allegedly became aggressive and assaulted two officers, biting one Garda on the hand. He currently faces charges of assault causing harm to one officer alongside a lesser charge of assault regarding the second officer.

During the initial hearing, presiding Judge Áine Clancy noted the formal objections to bail presented by officers. Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that law enforcement verified Onowu's identity but informed the court that no set of bail conditions could satisfy concerns regarding his potential flight risk, given his total lack of ties or address within Ireland.

Addressing the court directly without legal counsel, Onowu rejected assertions regarding his travel background and expressed a desire to detail the circumstances leading to the encounter. He assured the court he would attend future proceedings. Daily Dazzling Dawn learned that Onowu was unrepresented due to ongoing industrial action by solicitors who have withdrawn services in District Court legal aid cases across Ireland.

Emphasising that the defendant maintains the full presumption of innocence under the law, Judge Clancy ultimately refused bail, remanding Onowu in custody ahead of his next procedural date. The accused has not yet indicated a formal plea, and further legal steps will depend on the upcoming remand hearing.
