Mother Pays Tribute to Woman and Seven-Year-Old Girl Killed in Grangetown Fire

Natalie McDonald, 34, and her seven-year-old niece, Valentina Foster, died after a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, in the early hours of Wednesday, while Cleveland Police investigate the circumstances surrounding the blaze and have arrested two men on suspicion of murder.

Natalie's mother, Lisa Kirton, described her daughter as a “beautiful soul” who would have done anything for anyone. She said the 34-year-old was “lovely, bright and bubbly” and was loved by everyone who knew her.

Valentina, known to her family as Tina, had been staying with relatives during the school summer holidays. Her death has added to the grief surrounding the incident, which also left a 48-year-old woman critically ill in hospital and three other people with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Two men, aged 23 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody as detectives work to establish how the fire started and whether anyone else was involved.

Lisa Kirton said the loss of her daughter had left the family struggling to comprehend what had happened.

Describing Natalie as a “beautiful soul”, she said her daughter had been someone who was willing to help others and was “lovely, bright and bubbly”.

Kirton also spoke about the death of Valentina, describing her seven-year-old granddaughter as a “cute little kid” who had been spending the summer with her family.

She said the circumstances surrounding the deaths were particularly difficult for relatives to understand, adding that she could not believe a seven-year-old child had lost her life.

The family is now facing the loss of two relatives while investigators continue their work at the scene.

Natalie's 15-year-old daughter survived the fire after escaping from the property through an upstairs window, according to her grandmother.

Kirton said the teenager and a friend managed to get out after the friend kicked out a window, allowing them to escape.

She said the friend's actions had “saved their lives”.

The account provides an indication of the speed and danger of the fire, with those inside the property forced to find an alternative route to safety.

Emergency services attended the scene during the early hours of Wednesday, with the blaze causing serious damage to the property.
