Bangladeshi-Canadian politician Tanveer Shahnawaz has secured a parliamentary seat in Canada's House of Commons following a decisive victory in the Beaches–East York federal by-election in Toronto on Monday. Standing as the official nominee for the governing Liberal Party of Canada, Shahnawaz captured a decisive majority, polling over 55 per cent of the total vote share. The outcome reinforces the federal Liberals' hold on the east Toronto constituency while establishing a historic milestone for minority political representation in Ottawa.
Decisive Electoral Mandate in Beaches–East York
According to preliminary vote tallies from Elections Canada, Shahnawaz secured 18,361 votes (55.7 per cent), finishing comfortably ahead of his closest contender, Shannon Devine of the New Democratic Party (NDP), who garnered 8,512 votes (25.8 per cent). Jim Syrbos of the Conservative Party placed third with 5,116 votes (15.5 per cent). Shahnawaz's commanding margin of more than 9,800 votes demonstrates strong local endorsement within the diverse urban riding.
The federal by-election was called following the resignation of long-standing Liberal Member of Parliament Nathaniel Erskine-Smith. Shahnawaz, who previously served as Erskine-Smith’s constituency office manager and policy adviser for approximately a decade, campaigned on housing access, social services expansion, and sustained public infrastructure development across east Toronto.
Deep Roots and Grassroots Engagement

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shahnawaz co-chaired regional emergency response teams, coordinating mobile health clinics and food distribution programmes across underserved neighbourhoods. Milestone for Bangladeshi Diaspora Representation
The result represents a significant advancement for the Bangladeshi diaspora in North American federal politics. While Dolly Begum made history at the provincial level by winning Scarborough Southwest in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Shahnawaz becomes the first person of Bangladeshi heritage elected directly to the Canadian House of Commons in Ottawa.
