A teenage driver crashed into a front garden just seconds after seriously injuring a 74-year-old man in a road collision.
Mohammed Khan, who was 17 at the time, crashed his Volkswagen Golf into the stationary car of Peter Jeffree in Watford, Hertfordshire, on September 5 last year. Video footage shows Khan driving at high speed and overtaking a red Mazda shortly before reaching a junction.
Only seconds later, a loud crash was heard as Khan's Volkswagen collided with Mr Jeffree's yellow Reliant Scimitar GTE. Separate footage from a doorbell camera then captured the moment Khan's Golf continued off the road and smashed into another vehicle in the front garden of a property.
Mr Jeffree suffered three fractured vertebrae, cracked ribs and a cracked sternum in the collision. His classic car, which he had owned for more than 40 years, was also described as being "completely destroyed."
Mr Jeffree said the consequences could have been even more serious if his wife had been travelling with him. He said: "If I had anyone in my car, if my wife had been in the passenger seat and they had hit me in the middle of the car, we both could have been killed."
The court heard that Khan had three friends travelling in his vehicle and was driving at around 60mph in a residential area where the speed limit was just 30mph.
Khan overtook another vehicle at high speed before he "shot across the junction without any hesitation" and crashed into Mr Jeffree's car. He is now 18 and was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on Friday last week after admitting to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He received a 19-month sentence at a Young Offenders' Institution, but the sentence was suspended for three years. He was also ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and take part in 15 days of rehabilitation activities.
Khan was additionally banned from driving for three years and will have to pass an extended driving test before he is allowed back on the road.
Prosecutor Nadine Mathurasangh told an earlier hearing that Khan was driving a red Volkswagen along Stratford Way at around 2pm. She said he had been seen travelling at an excessive speed, with a witness estimating that he was driving between 60 and 70mph in a 30mph zone.
As Khan approached the junction with Cassiobury Drive, he carried out a dangerous overtake of a red Mazda on the offside, the court was told. The woman driving the Mazda said Khan's vehicle then "shot across the junction without any hesitation" before crashing into Mr Jeffree's car.
The impact sent both vehicles spinning. Khan's car came to a stop in someone's front garden, while Mr Jeffree's vehicle eventually stopped in the middle of the road.
In mitigation, Khan's defence lawyer Amita Patel told the court that her client was remorseful about what happened. She said he had written a "heartfelt" letter of apology to Mr Jeffree.
In the letter, Khan wrote that he had thought about the crash repeatedly since it happened and sincerely wished he could change what had taken place.
