Boy, 12, Dies After Train Crashes Into Car at Irish Level Crossing

A 12-year-old boy has died after a train collided with a car at a level crossing in County Mayo, Ireland, with the railway line between Westport and Athlone closed until further notice as emergency services investigate the serious crash. Passengers travelling on the westbound service involved in the first collision were transferred by bus to Athlone, where they re-boarded a train travelling towards Westport.

That replacement service was later involved in the second collision at Ballyhaunis.

The sequence of incidents resulted in significant disruption for passengers travelling between Dublin and western destinations, with emergency arrangements required to move people around affected sections of the railway.

The investigation into the fatal collision at Kiltybo is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the vehicle's presence on the user-operated crossing, the operation of the crossing itself and the movements of the train before the impact.
