A thirty-eight-year-old robber who held up a Blackburn bookmakers with what workers believed to be a firearm wrapped inside a plastic carrier bag has been sentenced to five years in prison. Atif Chowdhary targeted the Betfred branch situated on Whalley New Road, escaping with £3,000 in cash following a calculated late-evening intrusion. The sentencing, confirmed at Liverpool Crown Court following an admission of guilt to robbery, brings conclusion to a major investigation led by Lancashire Constabulary.
Calculated Reconnaissance on Whalley New Road
The sequence of events unfolded on the evening of 1 July, when staff members were preparing for closing procedures inside the Whalley New Road premises. At approximately 7:25 pm, Chowdhary walked through the front doors posing as an ordinary punter, directly asking the on-duty cashier how much longer the betting office would remain open.
Having confirmed the closing timetable and evaluated the presence of staff, Chowdhary left the premises on foot and walked back towards his residence on Ash Street. There, court proceedings detailed, he underwent a deliberate disguise change, outfitting himself in a dark balaclava to conceal his identity before returning to execute the raid under cover of darkness.
The Ambush and Career of Intimidation
Rather than approaching through the monitored front entrance, Chowdhary executed an ambush through the perimeter rear. He scaled a boundary wall from a neighbouring yard, bypassed outer security, and forced his way into the betting shop through the back door.
Once inside, Chowdhary brandished a plastic carrier bag fashioned to conceal an object that staff genuinely believed to be a live firearm. Daily Dazzling Dawn learned that the offender issued direct threats of physical harm against the terrified employee if cash was not handed over immediately. Paralyzed by fear and faced with the immediate prospect of lethal violence, the lone worker opened the safe and till drawers, handing over £3,000 in paper currency.
With the stolen funds in hand, the balaclava-clad raider fled out into the street network. During his escape through neighbouring alleyways, Chowdhary peeled off sections of his discarded outer clothing in an attempt to thwart forensic detection, before slipping quietly back into his home on Ash Street.
Arrest and Judicial Reckoning at Liverpool Crown Court
Lancashire Constabulary immediately deployed specialized detectives from East Division CID to secure the scene. Officers conducted exhaustive CCTV tracking, local canvassing, and forensic recovery along the alleyway route where the discarded garments had been dumped. Within four days of the offence, on 5 July, tactical officers arrested Chowdhary at his home address without incident.
Chowdhary subsequently entered a formal guilty plea to robbery when brought before the judicial bench at Liverpool Crown Court. Presiding judges handed down an immediate custodial sentence of five years, noting the psychological trauma inflicted upon service industry employees.
Speaking to Daily Dazzling Dawn, Detective Constable Tom Farrell of East Division CID underscored the severity of the confrontation, stating that the robbery was a terrifying ordeal for the staff member at the bookmakers, with Atif Chowdhary making threats to steal a large quantity of money. The conviction stands as a clear deterrent across East Lancashire against commercial robberies involving weapon threats.
