Dozens of flights have been cancelled at Heathrow Airport today, with British Airways being the most affected airline. Routes to destinations such as Miami, Milan, Prague, and others are impacted. Travellers departing from Heathrow today are advised to check the airport’s website and contact their airline for the latest flight information.
The cancellations and delays come as an amber thunderstorm warning covers London and much of southeast England. Forecasters are warning of “torrential” rainfall, with the amber alert in effect from 4am to 11am today, spanning an area from Hampshire to Kent and up to Cambridge, including all of London.
Within the warning zone, 20–30mm of rain could fall in just an hour, with totals of 60–90mm possible over a few hours where downpours are persistent. According to the Met Office, flooding could cut off some communities, disrupt train and bus services, and cause power outages. Homes and businesses are also at risk of flooding.
This is the first amber warning issued for London since January of last year.
Despite the heavy rain, temperatures are expected to remain high, reaching the upper 20s across much of England. The unsettled weather is forecast to continue into Sunday and the start of next week.
