Nine-Year-Old's Death: Wakefield Man in Court Charged with Murder

A 35-year-old man has appeared in private before Forfar Sheriff Court charged with the murder of nine-year-old Minnie Merriman, who was found fatally injured at an industrial estate in Angus while camping with her family.

Christopher Rice, of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, made no plea during the hearing on Wednesday and was committed for further examination before being remanded in custody. He is scheduled to reappear within the next eight days as detectives continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the young girl's death.

Minnie, who was from West Yorkshire and affectionately known as "Minnie Moo" by her heartbroken family, was discovered with serious injuries shortly after midnight on Monday at the Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath. She was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she tragically later died from her injuries.

Police have confirmed that Minnie and the 35-year-old accused were known to one another, though the precise nature of their relationship has not been disclosed. Three other individuals, believed to be family members, were also taken to hospital following the incident but have since been discharged. Detectives have confirmed that no other suspects are being sought in connection with the death.

In an emotional tribute released through Police Scotland, Minnie's family said: "We are devastated with the loss of our beloved, absolutely incredible, beautiful and brave Minnie Moo. Our family asks that our privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time."

Detective Inspector Mike Ness, of Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team, told journalists: "Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by these events, especially Minnie's family. A police presence will remain in the area while our inquiries continue."

He added: "Anyone with any concerns, or information, should approach these officers or contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0008 of Monday August 3."

West Yorkshire Police are providing support to the Scottish investigation, with forensic teams continuing to examine the scene at the Elliot Industrial Estate. Officers remain in the area while inquiries progress. Members of the public have left floral tributes at the location, and the family is being supported by specialist officers.

The next court appearance is expected to take place before the end of next week, with the Crown Office continuing to prepare the case for further proceedings.
