A 55-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter after another man died following a dog bite during an alleged altercation on a footpath in Calder Grove, Wakefield. Lee Ellis, of Blacker Lane, Calder Grove, has also been charged with being the owner or person in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog causing injury resulting in death, according to West Yorkshire Police.
Ellis has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Bradford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 18 August. A German Shepherd seized by officers during the investigation remains in police kennels while detectives continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

The charges follow an incident on Saturday afternoon, 15 August, on the old trainline footpath off Blacker Lane in the Calder Grove area of Wakefield. Police were called after receiving reports of an altercation, during which a 55-year-old man was bitten by a dog.
The injured man was taken to hospital but later died. West Yorkshire Police has not publicly named the victim, and the circumstances leading to the fatal injuries remain under investigation.
Police Investigation Underway
West Yorkshire Police has launched a detailed investigation into the incident, with detectives examining what happened before, during and after the reported confrontation on the disused railway route.
The force has confirmed that the German Shepherd believed to have been involved was seized and remains under police control. Its continued detention forms part of the investigation into the circumstances of the fatal incident.
The distinction between the reported dog bite, the alleged altercation and the subsequent death is central to the investigation. At this stage, Ellis has been charged but has not been convicted of any offence. The manslaughter allegation will therefore be tested through the criminal justice process.
Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that the case remains at an early stage, with investigators continuing to assess evidence gathered from the scene and witnesses.
Family Being Supported By Specialist Officers
West Yorkshire Police said the family of the 55-year-old man who died is being supported by specially trained officers. The force has not released the victim’s identity, allowing relatives to be informed and supported while the investigation progresses.
The old trainline footpath where the incident occurred is used by walkers and forms part of the local area around Calder Grove. Police previously appealed for witnesses who may have seen or heard the events surrounding the altercation to assist detectives with their enquiries.
Investigators are particularly interested in establishing a clear sequence of events, including what happened immediately before the dog became involved and the actions of those present at the scene.
German Shepherd Remains In Police Kennels
The German Shepherd seized by police has not been released and remains in police kennels. Its future will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation and any decisions made through the legal process.
The seizure also allows investigators to preserve the animal as potential evidence while enquiries continue. Police have not indicated that any conclusion has yet been reached about the dog's behaviour beyond the circumstances described in the charge.
The incident has prompted renewed attention to the responsibilities of people who own or control dogs, particularly where an animal is alleged to have caused serious injury. However, the precise circumstances of this case will ultimately need to be established through evidence rather than speculation.
Court Appearance Expected On Tuesday
Lee Ellis remains in custody ahead of his appearance at Bradford Magistrates’ Court. West Yorkshire Police confirmed the charges on Tuesday and said the case relates specifically to the Saturday afternoon incident on the old trainline footpath off Blacker Lane.
The court process will determine the next stage of the proceedings. The manslaughter charge and the allegation concerning a dangerously out-of-control dog are separate matters, although both arise from the same incident.
As the investigation continues, police are expected to assess witness accounts, forensic evidence and other available material to establish exactly how the confrontation unfolded and how the dog became involved.
For the victim’s family, the investigation follows the death of a man after he was bitten during the reported altercation. Specialist officers remain in contact with relatives as detectives work to establish the full circumstances.
Daily Dazzling Dawn will continue to follow developments as the case progresses through the courts and further information is released by West Yorkshire Police.
