A twenty-five-year-old student carer from Pakistan has been sentenced to twelve years in prison at Bristol Crown Court after carrying out a sustained sexual assault on a bedbound pensioner, before attempting to blame the vulnerable victim for the offence. Fazli Qadeer, who arrived in the United Kingdom on a student visa to study alongside his brother in Bristol, targeted the woman in her seventies after deliberately establishing that her family members would be away from the premises. The conviction concludes a distressing legal proceeding that has prompted an immediate review of the defendant’s UK immigration status by the Home Office.
Proceedings established that Qadeer secured employment within the domestic care sector to fund his living expenses while pursuing higher education in the South West. Having identified that the complainant was isolated and entirely physically reliant on assistance, Qadeer entered the room, mounted her bed, and stated that he loved her and intended to marry her. He then subjected the woman to an ordeal involving intimate touching, forced kissing, and oral rape.
Following his apprehension by Avon and Somerset Police, Qadeer mounted a defence that drew sharp rebuke from prosecutors. Rather than admitting the offences, the defendant sought to persuade the jury that the elderly, bedbound woman had instigated the incident and sexually assaulted him. Lovatt told journalists that the defendant cited an upbringing shaped by severe hardship, violence, and institutionalised fear in Peshawar, Pakistan. Defence submissions also indicated that Qadeer had disclosed to family members post-conviction that he had experienced sexual abuse during his own childhood.
His Honour Judge handed down a determinate custodial sentence of twelve years, alongside a strict restraining order barring Qadeer indefinitely from attempting any direct or indirect contact with the victim.
