The Home Office has released further information about the digital immigration system, which is expected to be fully implemented in early 2025.
The new system means that individuals will no longer be issued a physical document confirming their entry status (such as a biometric residence permit), but will have an online record of their status and exit conditions, known as an e-visa.
Some people already have an e-visa, such as those who have been granted leave under the European Settlement Scheme or who have used the UK Immigration Office ID Check app to prove their identity when applying for a visa.
However, those who do not yet have an e-visa must first register with her UKVI account. You can then access your e-visa and share information about your leave status/conditions with potential employers and landlords through this account. You will also be able to update personal information within your account, such as a change of address or current passport details.
According to the latest information from the Home Office, if you are currently on leave to stay in the UK and have physical documentation, you do not need to do anything yet to set up an online UKVI account.
The Home Office will provide updates throughout 2024 about when and how you need to register for an account.
Anyone who needs to apply for a residence permit extension during this period should follow the normal application process and will be provided with information and guidance on setting up her UKVI account if required.
As always, those with temporary leave confirmed by a physical document or electronic visa should schedule the expiry date of their leave, take steps to leave the UK or extend their leave in advance, and ensure that it is valid. It is very important to apply for a deadline. This is to ensure that they do not inadvertently overstay, which is a crime.
