More than 20 UN experts and special rapporteurs called on all countries to recognize Palestine.
After the resolution was passed in the parliament, the country's foreign minister Tania Faizon said that Slovenia wants a Palestinian-Israeli two-state solution to ensure lasting peace in the Middle East. For that purpose, they recognized the state of Palestine as the 147th country.
Prime Minister Robert Golob said that Slovenia wants to convey the light of hope to the Palestinian people of Gaza and the West Bank through this historic recognition.
Earlier, Spain, Norway and Ireland recognized Palestine as an independent state on May 22. It is effective from May 28. Following their lead, Slovenia finally recognized Palestine. Slovenia hopes that this recognition will strengthen global efforts to stop the ongoing Israeli atrocities in Gaza.
Earlier, among the 27 countries of the European Union, Spain, Sweden, Cyprus, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria have recognized Palestine. Soon Malta will also follow this path.
