Less than two hours after a devastating report on the Grenfell Tower disaster was released, dozens of firemen were dispatched to deal with a fire in a tower block in south-east London.
After a fire broke out in two apartments on the ninth and tenth floors of the Catford building, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) received fifty calls during the lunch hour on Wednesday.
Approximately 70 firefighters in ten fire engines were called to the scene, and at one point, dense smoke was visible pouring from the top corner of the 11-story structure. Firefighters reported that the fire was under control and that no casualties had been reported at around 2:00 PM.
Photographs of the concrete-clad block showed the top corner of the building covered in black soot, as a firefighter on a cherrypicker hoist looked on.
The cause of the Catford fire is not known. Earlier the LFB urged the public to avoid the area around Rosenthal Road, while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.
Traffic was barred from Rosenthal Road, according to photos.
The LFB had earlier released the following statement: "A fire at a block of apartments on Rosenthal Road in Catford is being tackled by ten fire engines and about seventy firefighters." There is now a fire in two apartments located on the building's ninth and tenth floors.
About fifty calls to the fire have been handled by the brigade's 999 control officers. At 12:51 p.m., the brigade was called. At the site are fire departments from Forest Hill, Greenwich, Deptford, Lee Green, and nearby fire stations.
"At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown."
