  • A Palestinian Muslim father, mother, and teenage daughter have died off Shoreham-by-Sea, while their surviving younger daughter remains in critical care.

A catastrophic coastal emergency in West Sussex has claimed the lives of three members of a Palestinian Muslim refugee family—a father, a mother, and their teenage daughter—after they encountered insurmountable sea currents while swimming near Shoreham-by-Sea on Tuesday afternoon. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (Indeed, to Allah we belong and indeed, to Him we will return.)

Emergency services were alerted close to Shoreham Fort at approximately 2:40 pm on 18 August 2026 following urgent reports that four members of the same household had been overcome by turbulent coastal waters. Although first responders successfully recovered all four individuals from the sea, the parents and their elder daughter were pronounced deceased at the scene, while their youngest daughter was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Diplomatic Confirmation and Identification of Victims

The Palestinian Embassy in London and community representatives confirmed to journalists that the deceased father was Hossam al-Khawas, a registered Palestinian refugee originally from the Rashidieh Camp in southern Lebanon. Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that the deceased mother was Zeina Alyan and the deceased elder daughter was teenage pupil Sarah, while the sole surviving younger daughter, Saja, remains hospitalised under specialized intensive care. Consular officials and Sussex Police family liaison officers are working in coordination to establish formal contact with surviving extended family across the international diaspora, alongside providing immediate welfare and administrative support for the surviving child.

Extensive Multi-Agency Coastal Emergency Response

The rescue operation mobilized an extensive deployment of airborne, maritime, and land-based emergency teams across Shoreham Harbour. HM Coastguard deployed an airborne rescue helicopter in conjunction with Coastguard Rescue Teams from Shoreham, Littlehampton, and Newhaven, working alongside all-weather lifeboat units dispatched by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) from Shoreham station. Clinicians from the South East Coast Ambulance Service, assisted by two emergency air ambulances landing in the vicinity of the Southwick Lighthouse, administered immediate resuscitation on the shoreline. The surviving child was subsequently transferred to hospital by road ambulance under emergency police escort.

To facilitate unimpeded emergency access and ensure public safety, Sussex Police placed an emergency cordon across the surrounding area and shut down the A259 Brighton Road in both directions near Shoreham Fort for several hours. Chief Superintendent James Collis of Sussex Police stated to journalists that the loss of three members of one family represents an immense tragedy that will have a profound effect on both the surrounding Sussex community and the wider public.

Marine Conditions and Harbour Hydrodynamics

Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident, titled Operation North by Sussex Police, indicate that the family had entered the water from the shoreline for a swim before being overwhelmed by adverse coastal conditions. Maritime observers noted that strong local winds and choppy waters created challenging currents around the estuary entrance, where swells bounce between the concrete breakwaters and the harbour walls. These hydrodynamics can generate unpredictable undertows that quickly draw swimmers into deeper shipping channels.

Community Reaction and Coronial Inquiries

The tragedy has prompted deep mourning across the local region as well as the British Palestinian and Muslim communities. Tom Rutland, the Member of Parliament for East Worthing and Shoreham, expressed his deepest condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and stated that the entire community remains united in praying for the full recovery of the young girl undergoing emergency medical treatment. HM Coastguard has concluded its sea searches with no additional persons reported missing, and coronial inquiries are underway to establish the formal findings into the deaths.
