US to propose barring Chinese software, hardware in connected vehicles

Because of national security concerns, the U.S. Commerce Department is anticipated to recommend on Monday banning Chinese hardware and software from being used in connected and autonomous automobiles on American roads. A source gave Daily Dazzling Dawn confirmation.Regarding Chinese firms' data collecting on American drivers and infrastructure, as well as possible foreign manipulation of linked automobiles, the Biden administration has expressed grave concerns. The proposed rule would forbid the sale or import of automobiles from China equipped with hardware or software for automated driving systems or crucial communications systems.

The department plans to give the public 30 days to comment before any finalization of the rules, the sources said, adding that the department plans to propose making the prohibitions on software effective in the 2027 model year and the prohibitions on hardware would take effect in January 2029. The Commerce Department declined to comment on Saturday.
