UK faces 9-inch snow but 'one' part of England will be spared flurries

The weather in the UK is expected to worsen as we move past Christmas and into the New Year, with up to 24 cm of rain expected to hit the nation. A blanket of the white stuff, spanning between 1 and 3 cm, will cover the worst-hit areas of England, including the Scottish Highlands, the north of England, including Yorkshire, the North East, and the North West.

However, there won't be any flurries in central regions, such as Birmingham and the West Midlands. In the north, Scotland may expect 24 cm, or 9.5 inches, of precipitation as the new year begins, with 2025 beginning with a torrential downpour.

The BBC outlook for December 27 explains: "Staying cloudy, dull and dry for most with persistent mist and fog over the hills and elevated areas. The best of any bright spells will be in north-eastern areas. Patchy rain in north-west Scotland.

"Tonight, central and southern England will stay overcast. Elsewhere, there will be large amounts of cloud albeit with some clear breaks in between. Light, patchy rain in Scotland, Northern Ireland." The Saturday (December 28) outlook adds: "Mostly cloudy tomorrow with a few brief bright spells in places. Skies will clear in northern Scotland for a time but it will be windier with blustery showers in the north-west and the Isles."

And the outlook for Sunday to Tuesday adds: "Breezy on Sunday with variable cloud and bright spells in Wales and England. Cloudier in Northern Ireland and Scotland with spells of rain in Scotland, some wintry over the northern hills. Staying breezy on Monday with large areas of cloud for most and rain in Northern Ireland and Scotland; snow in north Scottish hills. Windier on Tuesday with further snow in the north hills."
