Although it is looking into rumors of a possible data breach that may have affected millions of user accounts, OpenAI says it has not yet discovered any proof to back up the allegations.
According to the purported breach, which surfaced on a hacker site on Friday, a threat actor may have obtained the passwords and email addresses of 20 million OpenAI accounts.
The claimant is trying to sell the entire dataset after providing what appears to be a sample of the stolen data.
OpenAI has said that it is taking the reports "seriously" and is looking into the matter, even if the accuracy of these accusations has not yet been verified.
Although OpenAI stated in a statement that it was investigating the concerns, the veracity of the claims has not been confirmed.
A representative for OpenAI stated, "We take these claims seriously."
"To date, we have not observed any indication that this is linked to an OpenAI system compromise."
The AI firm is the maker of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot which has exploded in popularity since its original launch in late 2022.
Cybersecurity expert Jamie Akhtar, chief executive and co-founder of CyberSmart, said consumers should exercise additional caution by updating passwords and log-in credentials, and warned that cybercriminals could look to exploit the incident.
“If verified, this breach could have huge ramifications, both for OpenAI and its customers,” he said.
“Millions of people and businesses have embraced the company’s technology into their daily lives, so the potential damage to OpenAI’s reputation for data security could be huge.
“Worse still, compromised accounts could be used to access and abuse sensitive customer data or to exploit OpenAI’s APIs and distribute malware and other cyber nasties.
“There’s also the possibility of cybercriminals using stolen user credentials to produce targeted phishing campaigns, steal identities, or commit financial fraud.
"Anyone using the tool should update their passwords and credentials as a precaution, even if OpenAI has not officially confirmed this compromise.
Additionally, if you haven't already, enable multi-factor authentication in OpenAI's settings. This should provide an additional layer of security, even in the event that your password is compromised.
