A Polish woman who previously claimed to be Madeleine McCann has been charged with stalking the missing girl’s parents.

Julia Wandelt, 23, is accused of stalking Gerry and Kate McCann, as well as their two other children.

According to Leicestershire Police, Ms. Wandelt was arrested upon arrival at Bristol Airport on Wednesday. She faces four counts of stalking and is set to appear in magistrates' court on Friday.

She is charged with stalking Kate McCann between May 2, 2023, and February 15, 2024, causing serious alarm or distress. She faces the same charge for allegedly stalking Gerry McCann during the same period.

The allegations include making unwanted contact with the couple, showing up at their residence, and sending letters, phone calls, voicemails, and WhatsApp messages.

Ms. Wandelt is also accused of stalking Madeleine’s sister between January 3 and April 21, 2023, and Madeleine’s brother between November 27 and December 29, 2023, both causing serious alarm or distress.

Leicestershire Police also confirmed that a 60-year-old woman from Wales, arrested in connection with the case, has been released on bail.

Background on the Madeleine McCann Case

Madeleine McCann disappeared in May 2007 while on vacation with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Her parents were dining at a nearby restaurant when she vanished from their holiday apartment. The case gained worldwide attention and became one of the most infamous missing-person investigations in history.

Wandelt’s Claims and DNA Test

In February 2023, Ms. Wandelt gained attention online by posting under the handle @IamMadeleineMcCann, claiming she was the missing child.

During an interview with the BBC, she stated that she had been sexually abused as a child and believed a police sketch of a suspect in the McCann case resembled her abuser.

She also said she questioned her parents about whether she was adopted and suspected she had been kidnapped due to gaps in her memory, a lack of childhood photos, and no records of her mother’s pregnancy.

However, after undergoing a DNA test, the results confirmed she was not related to Madeleine McCann.
