  • UK passport fees are set to increase, adding to the financial strain on Britons.

  • Both online and postal application costs are rising for adults and children.

  • This is another cost of living increase that citizens of the UK are facing

Passport fees are set to increase significantly next month as part of the Labour Government’s plans, unveiled by the Home Office, to adjust costs for applicants.

If approved by Parliament, the new fees will take effect on April 10, 2025. The Home Office stated that the changes aim to ensure the system is funded by those using it rather than relying on taxpayer money.

The Government does not profit from passport applications, with the fees covering processing costs, consular support abroad, and border services for British citizens.

Here is a full list of the proposed changes to standard passport application fees by the Home Office:

  • Fee for a standard online application made from within the UK will increase from £88.50 to £94.50 for adults
  • Fee for a standard online application made from within the UK will increase from £57.50 to £61.50 for children
  • Postal applications will increase from £100 to £107 for adults and £69 to £74 for children

Here is a full list of the proposed changes to the premium passport application fees by the Home Office:

  • Fee for a Premium Service (one day) application made from within the UK will increase from £207.50 to £222 for adults
  • Fee for a Premium Service (one day) application made from within the UK will increase from £176.50 to £189 for children

Here is a full list of the proposed changes to overseas passport application fees by the Home Office:

  • Fee for a standard online application when applying from overseas for a UK passport will rise from £101 to £108 for adults
  • Fee for a standard online application when applying from overseas for a UK passport will increase from £65.50 to £70 for children
  • Overseas standard paper applications will increase from £112.50 to £120.50 for adults and £77 to £82.50 for children.

With this announcement, the Home Office and Passport Office are reminding customers to apply well in advance of their travel date.

Last year, 99.7% of standard applications were processed within three weeks, provided no additional information was required.

After a significant 9% increase in February 2023, the cost of applying for a passport went up by 7% in April 2014.

Applications from travellers whose dates of expiration are approaching and who wish to avoid the price increase are anticipated to soar.

It is anticipated that government ministers would affirm that the price increase will take effect on April 10.
